Fri 12 May | 7.30pm | 'The Music of Caludon Castle' John Smyth was House Steward at Caludon Castle during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and wrote about the history of the Berkeley family. The family chose small and homely Caludon (near Coventry) as their favourite residence at that time, rather than the grandeur of the great Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire. Lord and Lady Berkeley were both musicians and the house was full of music, including a visit from the great John Dowland. Our actor, John Seeley, will speak Smyth’s words and the consort will play appropriate music. There are amusing stories, some tragedy and, of course, some wonderful music. 7.30pm at St Philip’s Church Centre, Manor Road, Dorridge, Solihull, B93 8DX (map) Photo gallery 44-minute video 'Lords of the Manor: The lost history of Caludon Castle', which includes a brief clip of the Lachrimae Consort and our actor, John Seeley, playing John Smyth |
